Dell also gave indications it plans to release Windows 8

Microsoft willrelease Windows 8 in October, according to a new Bloomberg report. That report, which cited unnamed sources with “knowledge of the schedule,” suggested that the next-generation operating system will appear on devices with competing Intel and ARM chipsets. While Intel’s products continue to handily dominate the traditional PC space, ARM processors run a significant percentage of mobile devices such as tablets.

Microsoft, in a bid to make Windows 8 operate effectively on both traditional PCs and tablets, retooled the familiar desktop-based interface. When users first start their Windows 8 machine, they see a start screen composed of colorful, touch-friendly tiles linked to applications; from there, another click (or finger-tap) will send them to the “regular” desktop, which has undergone some tweaks of its own.

If Bloomberg’s report pans out, it would be wholly unsurprising. Windows XP and Windows 7,Microsoft’s two most successful Windows versions, both arrived on store shelves in October of their respective release years. In addition, near the end of 2011, executives from a major hardware partner told eWEEK that Microsoft was aiming for an October 2012 release date for Windows 8.

In November 2011, leaked slides from Asus hinted at a pair of Microsoft Windows 8 tablets arriving in the third quarter of 2012. Earlier in March, an article in DigiTimes suggested that Nokia would launch a Windows 8 tablet sometime in the fourth quarter of 2012, complete with a 10-inch screen and a Qualcomm dual-core chipset; that information came from unnamed sources among “upstream component suppliers,” who predicted that Nokia’s “venture into the tablet PC market will also further intensify competition among non-iPad tablet PC vendors.”

Dell also gave indications it plans to release Windows 8 tablets later in the year. “We have a road map for tablets that we haven’t announced yet,” Dell chief commercial officer Steve Felice told Reuters March 16. “We don’t think that this market is closed off in any way.” Those announcements will apparently come in the second half of 2012, suggesting a holiday release for whatever Dell has tucked up its collective sleeve.

In the tablet space, Microsoft will face significant competition from Apple, which recently released the next version of its best-selling iPad. And in traditional PCs, where Windows has long held an overwhelming market advantage, the company needs to cope with the prospect of mobile devices becoming peoples’ primary computing device. Windows 8 on tablets is the potential answer to both those conundrums, but it also sets up a significant challenge for Microsoft in the back half of 2012.

Windows 8 Tablets being more popular with IT managers

Overall I Don't think that there are that many companies out there developing their own iPad apps compared to the number of companies that already have or continue develop Windows applications.

That being the case it is conceivable that enterprises may choose to adopt Windows 8 based tablets over iPads in a big way, possibly catching up Apple despite their current market dominance. It's unlikely that Windows 8 based tablets will become popular among consumers any time soon. However, with a tablet running a regular version of Windows 8, probably in an enterprise flavor too, they will likely be popular among developers and IT managers who are accustomed to working with Windows.

Because Windows 8 Tablets aren't likely to be popular among consumers, I don't think we will see them making a big impact in the BYOD to work model of Microsoft Windows 8 tablets in the workplace that we have today. However, with Windows 8 Tablets being more popular with IT managers we may finally see a lot more companies now buying tablets for their employees. And who knows, maybe after people get used to using the Windows 8 Tablet they've been issued at work they may want the now familiar interface and apps for their own personal Tablet. This scenario is largely what happened with PCs and Laptops in the past causing PCs dominate the "PC" market that Apple Started in the 80s with the Apple II and early Macintoshes.

Will things play out this way? Who knows but I think some sort of scenario like this is what Microsoft is gambling on.

Microsoft Windows 8 who declined to be named

Microsoft will finish work on Windows 8 this summer, setting the stage for personal computers and tablets with the operating system to go on sale around October, according to sources with knowledge of the schedule.

The initial rollout will include devices running Intel and ARM chips, making good on Microsoft's promise to support both standards, said the sources, Microsoft Windows 8 who declined to be named because the plans are confidential. In embracing ARM technology, Microsoft is using the same kind of processors as Apple's iPad. Still, there will be fewer than five ARM devices in the debut, compared with more than 40 Intel machines.

The timing would let Microsoft target Christmas shoppers with the new software, which works with touch-screen devices as well as laptops and desktop PCs. Microsoft, which has not announced timing for the Windows 8 release, aims to take back sales lost to the iPad and reinvigorate the sluggish PC market.

Windows 8

"If they miss the September-October timeframe, they're going to be stuck without being able to ship anything in 2012," said Mr Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner Inc. "The last thing Microsoft wants to have is a situation where there are no compelling Windows tablets at a time when the new iPad looks like it's going to be a good seller for the holidays."

Microsoft will host an event for its industry partners early next month, the sources said. The company will spell out its release strategy for Windows 8 , giving more details on timing and marketing, they said.

There will be fewer ARM-based devices in the rollout because Microsoft has tightly controlled the number and set rigorous quality-control standards, said one of the people. The new version of Windows will be the first to use ARM processors, which are most commonly found in smartphones. Windows 7, the current version, only works with Intel's technology. Three of the Windows 8 ARM devices will be tablets, the sources said.

Spokesmen for Microsoft and Intel declined to comment. Representatives of Nvidia, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm - the three chip companies supplying ARM-based processors - referred questions on the availability of devices to Microsoft.

Mr Steven Sinofsky, president of the Windows business, has said that Microsoft plans to have both ARM and Intel-based systems available when Windows 8 is released. "Our collective goal is for them to ship at the same time," he said last month. "I wouldn't be saying it's a goal if I didn't think we could do it."
